Recaps! Kovler Diabetes Center in the Community

Kovler in the Community – Recaps!

In the recent months, Kovler has had many exciting opportunities in the community, these ranging from sharing with families expert tips on diabetes management to advocating support for diabetes care and research. Kovler is immensely grateful for our welcoming community, and hopes to continue our efforts to bring to our community members the most quality resources in diabetes in the future. The following are recaps Kovler’s participation in the JDRF Family Day, ADA Summer Camps, the University of Chicago’s Farmers’ Market, and the ADA Expo.

JDRF Family Day at Six Flags

As a sponsor for JDRF Family Day, Kovler provided fun craft activities for the kids and met tons of awesome families at Six Flags Great America. Kids with diabetes had fun comparing insulin pumps with summer extern Carrie Turek while parents were able to find out how Kovler could help them obtain the best care for their kids based on the latest research on juvenile diabetes.

ADA Summer Camps

Kovler had a blast talking to families and handing out limited-edition Kovler frisbees this summer at the ADA Diabetes Camps! These camps give kids with diabetes the unique opportunity to go to a summer camp where every kid is just like them. Kids are able to play and learn while parents can rest assured that their kids will be surrounded by nurses, doctors, and other specialists in diabetes–like Kovler’s own Rochelle Naylor, MD, and Tiffany Grant, NP, who spent some time with the kids at Camp Crossroads in Chicago.

Farmers’ Market

Kovler summer extern Carrie Turek and event coordinator Carla Henault enjoyed a beautiful summer day outside at the first ever University of Chicago Medicine Farmers’ Market. There they talked to UCMC staff, patients, and friends, providing them with great nutrition information from Kovler dietitians and giving out hand sanitizers for attendees to use before trying all the great healthy recipe samples. This event was a fantastic (and fun!) opportunity for Kovler to support healthy living within the University of Chicago community. Look for Kovler at the next UCMC Farmers’ Markets in August and October!

The 2013 ADA EXPO

The Kovler Diabetes Center, in partnership with other departments of the University of Chicago Medicine, set up a mini-world at the 2013 American Diabetes Association EXPO back in April to give attendees a taste of Kovler’s multidisciplinary approach to diabetes care. Doctors, nurses, dietitians, and researchers came together to talk to attendees one-on-one and help people figure out how the University of Chicago Medicine can help them best manage their diabetes and treat their diabetes-related conditions.

The ADA EXPO was a fantastic opportunity for Kovler to meet with members of the greater Chicagoland community and demonstrate why it is one of the top centers for diabetes care in the country. It’s multidisciplinary approach and position at the forefront of diabetes research set Kovler apart and ensure that patients receive the best care possible. Kovler met so many wonderful people—and will be back to do it again in 2014!
