Illinois Governor signs diabetes registry bill into Lilly’s Law.
August 9, 2009
Lilly’s Law will require physicians and other healthcare providers around the state to report certain information to the Department of Public Health regarding patients with diabetes mellitus with onset before 12 months of age.
The information will be compiled in a registry for research. The Neonatal Diabetes Mellitus Registry is a 3-year pilot program to help track these rare cases of diabetes.
The legislation is the result of innovative treatment led Kovler Medical Director, Dr. Louis Philipson. In partnership with Peninsula University (U.K.), he and his team were among the first in the US to use the novel approach and move Lilly, a six year old at the time, from insulin to pills. “We hope this is a taste of things to come for the majority of people with diabetes,” said Dr. Philipson.
