Walgreens, Our Valuable Partner

From toy and winter coat drives to fundraising walks and informing neighbors about flu protection, Walgreens is building upon its long-standing tradition of community engagement.  This includes crucial healthy living, diabetes prevention and treatment programs and services.

To help keep the Walgreens retail network connected to the neighborhoods it serves, the company created a Community Leader Program in 2009. These 1,300 Community Leaders now identify and create local events each year.  The University of Chicago is proud to partner with Denise Scarpelli, Walgreens market pharmacy director, and the amazing team of pharmacists who work on Denise’s team throughout the Southside of Chicago.

The University of Chicago Medicine and Walgreens have teamed up in a variety of ways in recent years. Specifically, Walgreens has supported Kovler’s signature events, community engagement programs and diabetes education initiatives. This spring Kovler is proud to partner with Walgreens at the ADA Diabetes Expo at McCormick place on Saturday, April 5, 2014. This event will showcase the latest in diabetes care, technology and educational tools for individuals and children facing the challenges of diabetes.  In addition, Walgreens has offered to be a signature sponsor this year for the Eighth Annual “Living Well with Diabetes” Event on Saturday, May 10th co-host by the Kovler Diabetes Center and the Urban Health Initiative.

As part of the Improving Diabetes Care and Outcomes on the South Side of Chicago, a project based at the University of Chicago Medicine, diabetes patients who visit Kovler’s clinic can receive a prescription-like checklist of their doctor’s food recommendations and a coupon for $5 off $20 worth of healthy food at participating Walgreens locations. Patients also can get a $3 voucher for the weekly 61st Street Farmers Market in the Woodlawn neighborhood.

“The factors driving the diabetes prevalence rate on the South Side are multifaceted, and addressing them requires a comprehensive, nuanced approach,” said Peek, lead on the Food Rx initiative. “Many of the patients we see have challenges accessing and preparing healthy food. Through continued education and initiatives like this one, we’re working to chip away at the obstacles and alter behaviors.”
